About Freelancer Rights

Freelancer Rights explains what freelancers are legally owed, one issue at a time, and shows the real decisions behind each explanation. It is published by Lawson.

What is covered so far

The brand is not limited to one place, but the research is. Current coverage is the New York City Freelance Isn’t Free Act, with New York State law noted where it comes up in the decisions. Every right on this site carries a jurisdiction label so that a rule from one city is never read as a rule everywhere.

How the material is put together

  • Statute text is reproduced verbatim from the official New York City Code library, with the version label and retrieval date shown on the statute page.
  • Case examples come from a collection of publicly available court opinions and city enforcement records that are preserved as saved copies here. These are saved copies of public records, not certified copies.
  • Summaries distinguish what a party alleged from what a court found, and say which stage a case had reached. Surviving dismissal is never described as a win.
  • Later appellate history, full docket activity and whether any judgment was actually paid have not been comprehensively verified.
